Odd Pueblo: Snappy or crappy?

This fun Odd Pueblo feature asks the audience to rate a trend, topic or sighting of something around town: is it snappy or crappy?

The last snappy or crappy, thug outerwear, was riddled with crappy votes – 76 percent. Seven percent said such fashions were both snappy and crappy for different reasons while 2 percent said they didn’t know and had to go ask their parole officer about it.

The latest snappy or crappy weighs in at the opposite end of the scale: a big pink rhinoceros.

This sweet pink rhino stands atop Jack Furrier’s Western Tire Center on South Palo Verde Road, just north of Ajo Way. Every time I drive by I try to get a picture of it – and for once a fat truck was not in the way.

The rhino is a bright spot along an otherwise dour stretch of road. This particular stretch happens to double as a speed trap. At least if you get pulled over in the area, you can gaze at this real keen beast. The rhino is one of those phenomenons that cross the line from tacky to cool.

Besides, a giant rhino has got to be better than both white and pink elephants.

The pink rhino rules.

Would you put a big, colorful statue on your business?

Are you afraid of rhinos? Are you afraid of big pink things on top of buildings?

Mornin’ Rynski! Happily surprised to see you here! How’s that raise coming along from Gannett the benevolent? 😉 Well, the king o’ snap/crap strikes again. While I find the rhino kinda attractive on this bleak structure, the pink puts me off. Thought that color was reserved for flyin’ elephants and Lazlo’s chow… 🙂

      mornin’ radmax,
thanks for warm welcome – i’m surprised to be working, too – but i couldn’t sleep so thought i’d instead have some fun…speaking of lazlo’s chow, i’m editing the video of him eating a pinkie now – stay tuned on sawyer says!
speaking of pink – i’m none too fond of the color, either, but find it to work in some situations. this is def. one of those situations. the pink makes the rhino pop as well as adds to its attractive silliness.
rhino would be bland in a less poppy hue!
p.s. think the raise is in a check that’s in the mail…

Heya Ryn!! I vote this one snap/crap. While the Rhino is super cute…what the heck is it doing on top of a tire shop?? Snappy rhino, crappy location! I think it should be sitting in my living room! 😀

    • Rynski says:

      hiya jenna!
hahha – love your reasoning – and your assessment that it should instead by in your living room.
i agree with that! i’d love this thing in my yard or atop my own house.
but i’ll also argue that its placement atop a tire shop is kooky and questionable, as you mentioned: what the heck is it doing there?
i will submit that adds to its snappiness as it’s so out of place.

Good morning, Ryn.  Definitely Tres Snappy.

Before we moved, we had a ten foot long snake in our front yard.  He was made of concrete and covered with mosaic tile.  Until I saw the pink rhino, I thought we were the kings of fantasy animals.

When in Tubac, did you happen to see the giant chicken?  I believe she is on the road between Tumacacari and Tubac.

    • Rynski says:

      hey leftfield,
Yaaaaaay!!! a fellow full snappy vote!
big mosaic snake sounds awesome, too – was it near downtown? i have a similar yard ornament in my snap/crap files that i still have yet to post – but it looks more like a lizard.
don’t recall seeing a giant chicken near tubac – pooh. would have loved to! bet that one’s high on your snappy list, too, no?

      • leftfield says:

Hi Ryn.  No, our yard snake was straight outta Oro Valley (aka OV to all the OG’s of OV).  Yes, I’m survived the roughest “hood” in the valley.  Here’s to my homies from OV.

      • Rynski says:

haha – whew, glad you got outta there alive!!!

    • radmax says:

Lefty, where abouts is the chicken? I travel down there quite often and don’t remember seeing it. Is it in front of a store or gallery? I used to use an avatar of my daughter atop of a huge chicken outside of Knottsberry Farm, biggest one I’ve come across so far.

      • leftfield says:

Hi Rad, the big chicken is outside of either a restaurant or knick-knack shop (perhaps a shoppe).  About a month ago, I had business in Nogales (corrupting American values is a full-time job, you know).  On the way back, I stopped in Tumacacari to take photos of the Mission.  I took the frontage road from the Mission up to Tubac where I returned to the highway.  Somewhere in there I saw the chicken and what a grand sight she was; glorious in her size and impressive in her dignity; a veritable monument to the pulchritude of poultry.

      • radmax says:

Haha! I’ll definitely check it out.

      • radmax says:

Hey, a little off topic… 😉 but no comment on the Tricky Dick post? Such a fertile area for anti-Americanism…thought you would be all over it. 🙂

      • leftfield says:

I’m not entirely sure, but I suspect I am banned from Tyler’s blog.  I flew the commie flag there, and since then, my posts don’t appear.   Some people!  I think we commies have an image problem to overcome.  I blame it on Pol Pot and Uncle Joe; bad PR stuff.

      • radmax says:

Shame, I was lookin’ forward to it! Maybe we can persuade one of the ruling elite, someone with immense power and absolute authority around here to lift the ban. Rynski?…. 😉

      • azmouse says:

Doesn’t sound like Tyler to do that, though. She’s pretty cool about stuff.

      • Rynski says:

each blogger is the master of his or her domain. i hath neither the power of persuasion nor decision over such domains.

      • radmax says:

What!!!? This comes as quite a shock! I figured you are the Gannett Goddess…able smite comments and lift bans with a flick of your wrist…

      • Rynski says:

        alas, be shocked.
        i am but a mere mortal…hahah

    • azmouse says:

Love mosaic and reptiles!! That would be definitely snappy!!

  4. azmouse says:

I like the rhino, I like the pink and I like her cute face! 🙂
I even like the location. It shows someone is a little quirky and wanted a unique way to attract attention.

  5. John says:

crapola!!!!! looks like a 3rd grade paper-mache project. WTF is it doing on top of Jack Furier’s? Don’t they have their own ghraphics people?

if you want to see somehting nice check out the tile mosaic gila monsters on Irvington west of I-19….thats at least a profesisonal job.

    • Rynski says:

hahahhahahahhah! third grade paper mache! love it. i made a garfield paper mache pinata once – but it wasn’t as fine as the rhino (and i think i was in eighth grade by then…)
i will keep the irvington/I-19 mosaic gila monsters in mind, john thanks!
