Odd Pueblo: Snappy or crappy?

This fun Odd Pueblo feature asks the audience to rate a trend, topic or sighting of something around town: is it snappy or crappy?

The last snappy or crappy, a groovy Volkswagen bus, was definitely cruising on snappy.

The latest snappy or crappy may not be so snappy for some: positive reinforcement graffiti.

This graffiti was snapped at Lakeside Park, right before I had to put the camera away to chase Sawyer and Phoebe out of the water.

While it’s not very artistic per se, it is kind of refreshing to see a positive message scrawled on cold concrete amidst debris.

Yes, graffiti is illegal and often very crappy. No, I did not paint this.

Some graffiti, like those really cool murals that once graced many New York City subway trains, can also be quite artistic.

We’re not talking swear words or illegible tags, but graffiti that actually enhances a structure or mood.

Positive reinforcement messages, which some of us chant or tape to our bathroom mirrors, can really change your attitude and outlook.

Does this graffiti do it for you?

What do you think?

Good Morning!  It’s not only a day to be happy, it’s going to be a great day to be a chicken!

I am a big fan of public Stencil Art, especially those with a subversive message and Banksy’s work.  Some graffitti can be very artistic, but it has been tainted as a form by its connection with gangs and tagging.

    • Rynski says:

      morning, lefty!
it’s always a great day to be a chicken – or at least that’s what i’ve gathered from your input on them! haha.
i agree, some graffiti can really knock your socks off. but, alas, some good things seem to get crapped up, like, as you mentioned, graffiti’s gangs and tagging syndrome.

    • azmouse says:

I love your happy and bright attitude today, leftfield! 🙂

I think it’s snappy! It’s just a reminder to those people who might see this who are going through a hard time these days. Nothin’ wrong with that (besides the illegal graffiti part).

Mornin’ Rynski! I voted snap/crap…the ‘art’ sucks, but the tank obstacle ‘tiger teeth’ are cool as hell! PS-does the national guard train at lakeside? 🙂
PPS-Once in a great while I’m struck by the artistry of some taggers, mostly it’s just B.S.

    • Rynski says:

      mornin’ radmax!
you are the SNAP/CRAP king!! you know, you invented that phrase – hahah.
the art itself stinks, but the message is cool. anything called ‘tiger teeth’ has also got to be neat-o. i think the national guard does train at lakeside, but only after midnight. you should go there and look for them sometime….

On the NW corner of Euclid and E. 6th is that white house with the large printed letters: “Happiness is submission to God” but someone a while ago graffitied it by adding “zilla” to God, hence–  “Happiness is submission to Godzilla”.  It was removed thereafter…

    • Rynski says:

oh! i don’t know if that’s funny or not. thanks for your input, carolyn.
i think i have seen that one in the past, before the ‘zilla’ was added. and i liked that it made me think.
however, submission to godzilla would also make me think – do we really have a choice when it comes to submitting to godzilla? it doesn’t seem like he’d stand around and ask us.

    • koreyk says:

Several years prior to “zilla”, someone seamlessly repainted GOD to read DOG.  It remained that way for several weeks, presumably because it was so well done that it escaped notice.

  5. Carolyn Classen says:

Hey Ryn, I actually  like  monster Godzilla and all those crappy Japanese movies about him/it, so I thought that graffiti addition was funny, in a twisted, odd way.  My son even took a photo of it.

    • Rynski says:

hahha! glad to hear it. like i said, i wasn’t sure. but now you’ve swayed me…i’ll bet the church people, however, did not find it as amusing.
      godzilla is cool.

I just got back from Lakeside Park from my morning dog walk. Sorry I missed you, as my house is right down the street from there.

I’ve seen that particular ‘be happy’ and never gave it much thought. It’s a nice sentiment but we do have some issues with graffiti around here, although luckily I’ve never been tagged.

My best friend’s nephew has gotten into trouble for his artwork. One evening he was driving down the street and saw some of those barrels that block you on the freeway, and he stopped, took some and created what has now become ‘the barrel monster’. Is it art? You decide….
    http://www.newraleigh.com/articles/archive/barrel-monster-spotted-on-hillsborough-street/

    • koreyk says:

Most definitely art.  Most definitely snappy.  And because it was done without permission, and public money will have to be spent on replacements, most definitely vandalism.

How long did Barrel Monster last?

      • azmouse says:

Barrel Monster didn’t last  long, but the company who he took the barrels from to make it, actually dropped all the charges and offered him a job.
He came here a little after his arrest, and he’s just one of those kids, I guess, that he looks at stuff and sees something else in it and feels compelled to create.
He’s a good kid, was never in trouble before, and is a good student in college.

      • Rynski says:

        hey azmouse!
i remember monster barrell art when you brought it to my attn before – i LOVe it!! how very cool he was offered a job with the company. as a marketing maven? haha

      • azmouse says:

I know!! He’s really a great kid and full of creativity.

  7. A.Farley says:

Everyday for six months I’ve gotton one egg a day, a white one then the next day , a brown one and then suddenly, I have ten eggs, brown and white. What gives, Lefty? 9 are bantams and 2 leghorns, 2 buffs and two reds.
I can’t believe it, my captcha is “pullets tary”
    or Ryn, I forgot-Crappy

    • Rynski says:

      dear pullets tary,
sorry you find the happy graffiti crappy. but how snappy on your omelette material, even though it seems inconsistent.

    • leftfield says:

Farley – You’ve got 15 chickens or 11?  In either case, how old are your birds?  Did all those eggs appear just this morning?  Right now, most chickens should be in between laying periods.  In the absence of artificial light, chickens generally will stop laying and molt sometime after the fall equinox, then begin again sometime after the spring equinox as the days are getting longer.   The very young or very old will s0metimes be not quite on schedule.  Most chickens lay brown eggs, but the Leghorn lays white.  There’s no difference taste-wise or nutritionally.

So, if this is your birds’ first laying season, anything could happen.  If they are experienced layers, they should have stopped laying and molted already, as winter is coming on.

      • azmouse says:

Now I get why Foghorn Leghorn in the cartoon had that name. I didn’t know that was actually a type of chickie!

      • Rynski says:

regardless of his name origin, foghorn leghorn was a pain in the butt. i’m a porky pig fan.

      • azmouse says:

I like porky too, but if you think about it, now that we’re grown-ups, I look back and all Foghorn Leghorn was ever trying to do was get laid.
        Remember?!?

      • Rynski says:

hahah! you’re right. a PIGGISH pain in the butt! hahahahah porky was way less piggish…and he was a pig!

      • koreyk says:

        Marvin the Martian.

      • radmax says:

Next to bugs himself,(the oscar winning rabbit) foghorn leghorn was funny as hell! Ps-that little martian guy with the tennis shoes was also a crack-up! Porky? yaaawwwnnnn 🙂

      • A.Farley says:

How funny we’re using Ryn’s page for Chicken facts. They didn’t lay all summer long and just got fat. One frizzled Rooster who looks like a cheap Ryn hairpiece and a Chinese bantam Rooster cause the larger Roosters are just to big for the little hens and they loose their back feathers. The American bantams are new young layers the guy sold me to keep the Ki-yotes away, they fly up on the coop in case of danger. It’s so odd that they all just decided to start producing. Tierra Blanca Turkey Shoot this weekend. It is the first laying season for all of them.
        monday raps
